Commercial Operators

Job Description

This position is a key part of the Shell Trading & Supply global network (STN), the principal trading and shipping business of the Group. The STN is one of the largest trading and shipping companies worldwide and continues to be a dynamic and rapidly growing business. Commercial Operators are responsible for oil and freight operations to the various business desks. Commercial Operations staffs work alongside Traders / Trading Managers to optimize the deal portfolio to provide commercial benefits to the business. It is a fast moving and changing environment and Operators will work alongside a diverse, multi-cultured group of people. The work is extremely varied according to the desk, but Operators are developed to gain a common set of professional skills.

This role is specifically to provide Commercial Operations support to the Latin America (Latam) Crude Oil trading desk.

Accountabilities:

Ensure that all obligations arising from the contract/charter party are carried out and seek to add value by exercising embedded commercial and logistical deal options by using a pro-active approach to problem solving, in tandem with the wishes of the Traders.

Highlight any contract optimization opportunities, thinking on your feet to deal with contractual problems (e.g. off spec cargoes, vessel delays, etc.) and ensuring that these are managed professionally and optimally for the trading business.

Deal with oil and freight counterparties, terminals, vessels, agents and inspectors on a regular basis regarding all post-deal activities ensuring operations are expedited and all necessary operational information is communicated in good time and documentary requirements are met.

Make oil and vessel nominations, prepare and send voyage orders and monitor progress of vessels. Appoint independent inspectors, expeditors and ships agents.

Ensure that all oil and freight operational information is entered into Trading systems (FED/DEX, RADAR etc) in a timely fashion and ensure that the trading position is accurate at all times and adequate records are kept to meet legal and fiscal obligations.

Understand the potential commercial impact of cargo/demurrage claims and ensure that the necessary commercial actions are taken to protect Shell’s business position both during and after the physical activity.

Liaise with Finance Operations to ensure that deals are correctly and timely settled.

Gain & use a full understanding of all operational aspects of the Oil/Shipping deals and Global Trading Network Policies and Guidelines and ensure all commercial contractual/policy obligations are complied with.

The incumbent needs to be extremely detailed orientated, to be able to reconcile, agree volumes with third parties and answer queries on payment quality contracts

The incumbent is required to drive improvement programs specific to Latam operations across boundaries.

In addition to standard physical cargo operations the Latam Crude Oil Operator may also be required to:

  • Manage storage locations and stocks
  • Manage monthly forward allocation declarations
  • Operate specialised vessels operations including COA nominations and COA Owner liaison
  • The scope of this position may vary depending on the Operational activity assigned per portfolio / desk
  • Dimensions The incumbent will be working on the Latam Crude Oil desk, but is part of the Crude Oil Commercial Operations team, and will be expected to learn the other roles within the team in order to provide flexibility. A competent operator should be a good communicator, with strong stakeholder management skills, well organized with commercial awareness and team skills; to be pro-active in showing initiative and have or gain knowledge of all parts of the trading business.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Previous knowledge of Oil and Freight operations would be advantageous.
  • The incumbent will have to be extremely adaptable, be able to work under pressure, be able to successfully prioritize work depending on current situations and must be a good team player.
  • Knowledge of Trading systems such as RADAR / DEX / GMAS would also be advantageous.
  • Understanding of pricing structures and the concept of pricing exposure would be desirable but not necessary.

Operators often must be able to respond quickly and accurately to challenging and sometimes conflicting deadlines in order to comply with business needs and policy guidelines.
