Deputy Director General

Job Description

The Deputy Director General reports to and partners closely with the Director General to achieve the organization’s mission and vision as well as strategic planning and coordination of the organization’s programs, projects, and policies.

The Deputy Director General will be a dynamic, experienced leader who will have the responsibility of managing the organization in the absence of the Director General.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Strategic Management and Leadership
  • In collaboration with the Director General, the Deputy Director General will be responsible for the strategic direction of The Bahamas Red Cross
  • Support management of the organization’s strategic plan, budget and fundraising strategy
  • Ensure the operationalization and adherence to all Bahamas Red Cross policies and procedures
  • Create a supportive environment that fosters personal responsibility and commitment to Bahamas Red Cross goals and values.

       2. Operational Management

  • Assist in managing the overall operations of the Bahamas Red Cross
  • Assist in overseeing the financial management with responsibility for ensuring quality and integrity of the systems and policies
  • Oversee management of contracts, procurement, and operations
  • Provide support and oversight to the team in all program planning, budgeting, documentation and monitoring
  • Assist Director General in ensuring timely, accurate and quality financial and narrative reporting compliance with donors
  • Foster intra-department linkages, communication and synergies within the Bahamas Red Cross.
  • Implement and foster adherence to the established Bahamas Red Cross policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures and strengthen transparent governance.
  • Contribute effectively to the overall strategic visioning, conceptual development, planning and monitoring of Bahamas Red Cross work.

       3. Communication & Coordination

  • Coordinate systematic planning and distribution of Bahamas Red Cross publications and other communications products in line with the Bahamas Red Cross vision, mission and work plans;
  • Support the Director General in the quality assurance of all Bahamas Red Cross publications and other communications products, in terms of the content, design and distribution plans
  • Assist the Director General in strengthening multi-stakeholders’ communications and brand awareness of the Bahamas Red Cross

       4. Internal and External Relations

  • Facilitate internal processes for Bahamas Red Cross staff that builds skills and commitment to organizational values and social justice
  • Demonstrate effective, values driven leadership to all Bahamas Red Cross staff
  • Foster a conducive environment that is transparent, accountable and supportive
  • Work collaboratively with the Director General on strategic decisions and leadership of the Bahamas Red Cross.
  • Represent Bahamas Red Cross at national processes and events where necessary.

       5. Strategic support

  • Provide strategic support and recommendations to the Director General on actions that require his direction;
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director General.

 6National Society Development

  • Assist the Director General with strategic planning and coordination of the organization’s programs and projects within the Family Islands particularly staff development, financial management and brand awareness
  • Establish, strengthen and maintain productive communication between BRC Headquarters and Member Groups
  • Provide oversight to Team Leaders and administrators through the development of communication and workflow processes and enforcement of programmatic policies

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPREIENCE:

  • Significant leadership experience at a national level in a comparably complex organization, ideally as an Executive Director with at least 15 years work experience with a minimum 5 years in an executive leadership role
  • Strong supervisory and project management skills and experience
  • Strong analytical, organization and prioritization skills
  • High level of initiative and desire to meet specific goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in managing a broad range of activities dealing with various international organizations and related institutions
  • Superior customer service skills to both internal and external audiences
  • An eagerness to help implement sustainable business practices
  • Ability to adhere to the highest ethical standards
  • Demonstrated empathetic disposition and positive attitude
  • Eagerness to work as part of a team, both as a leader and in a supporting capacity, to expand Bahamas Red Cross visibility

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Business Administration, Business Management, Public Policy or other relevant disciplines.
  • Relevant post-graduate degree or MBA (preferred)

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Strong operational leadership and management skills, including inspiring and managing large teams, acquired in the public, non-profit and/or private sector
  • Exposure to field leadership in a humanitarian organization; understands the complex dynamics with humanitarian action
  • Excellent relationship building skills; ability to build and strengthen internal and external networks, and establish effective partnerships with National Societies
  • Thought leader and strategic thinker with strong analytical skills.
  • Strong, proven negotiation and communication and advocacy stills
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, innovate, plan and execute ideas, as well as to impart knowledge and teach skills
  • Proven skills in information, communication, networking, advocacy and ability to relate to mass media
  • Capacity to drive and accompany change, including with regard to digital transformation.
  • Current knowledge of development issues, strategies, as well as programming policies and procedures in international development cooperation.
