Electronic Health Record Specialist

Job Description

NHIA is currently seeking suitable candidates for the position of: Electronic Health Record Specialist

The National Health Insurance Authority was established in The Bahamas in 2017 to facilitate the provision of accessible, affordable, equitable and quality healthcare services through a national insurance plan. The NHIA began providing services in April 2017. The number of people accessing services is growing so there exists a need to further expand our operations.

Opportunity

The EHRS will be the face of NHIA’s implementation and management electronic health records (EHR) and associated systems. Duties will include deep involvement in implementation of the EHR for NHI physicians and clinics, training of physicians, clinic administrators and internal power users. The EHRS will promote best practices in the use of these systems to all users. They will be responsible for the maintenance upgrades, enhancements and data integrity of our electronic health records and associated systems. The EHRS will participate in state and regional forums with representatives of other agencies to extend his/her knowledge of ways NHI can improve the use of its information systems.

The EHRS will report to the Information Technology Manager. The successful candidate will:

 

    • Provide administrative support and communicate on a regular basis to the Information Technology Manager about the status of work in process as well as tasks being accomplished in connection with departmental goals and initiatives.
    • • Assist the IT department with Continuing Quality Improvement projects.
    • • Deliver initial and ongoing EHR training to new and existing users.
    • • Interact with a broad range of internal system users (i.e. Medical, Counseling, Administration, and Community Wellness) to respond to requests for technical assistance received by email, IT ticket, or telephone.
    • • Document, investigate, identify and research technical issues/problems.
    • • Interact with other departmental professionals if necessary, to resolve issues/problems.
    • • Track and monitor the steps taken to resolve issues/problems in a timely and efficient manner.
    • • Perform in accordance with established project specifications and timelines, the activities associated with the on-site implementation and optimization of EHR.
    • • Perform various related duties and undertake special projects as directed by the Information Technology Manager.
    • • Optimization and customization of functions by role and program.
    • • Manage system upgrades (researching changes testing and scheduling communication).
    • • Document and communicate with end users about existing and new functions.
    • • Develop supporting documentation.
    • • Develop and manage projects to roll out new functionality and content standards.
    • • Design forms and procedures for consistent data entry.
    • • Recruit and develop power users to serve as internal resources for their departments.
    • • Train providers, supervisors and managers on how to run system reports and identify gaps in solution.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

    • An Associate Degree or above in Computer Science, Applied Science in Health Information Technology or other related or similar disciplines, bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Preferably a minimum of two years’ experience working with databases as an end user.
    • Coursework or work experience includes medical terminology, anatomy physiology, health records systems, and database maintenance.
    • Have experience as an EHR super-user/trainer which included tasks and responsibilities similar to those assigned to this job (e.g. troubleshooting and providing EHR and IT support).
    • Prior work experience with electronic health record (EHR) software.
    • Must be able to deliver prompt and practical customer service (i.e. systems and hardware troubleshooting, technical guidance, and support).
    • Must be able to work with multiple teams in a productive, effective and cohesive fashion.
    • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects/initiatives.
    • Understand the standards and practices associated with the delivery of managed healthcare services.
    • Ability to conduct and/or recommend appropriate technical training specific to the needs of each user of the EHR system.
    • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills which induce positive attitudes and support for work objectives.
    • Prior working experience in a Medical clinic environment is a plus.
    • Must demonstrate thorough functional competencies in using Microsoft Office Suite 2007 or above.
    • Possess excellent writing and public speaking skills.
    • Possess a valid Bahamian driver’s license.
