Revising the resume

res8

Should I ask for other people’s opinion?
It’s always a good idea to ask someone else to review your resume, that person will help you to see some mistakes that you probably didn’t notice. But it may not be a good idea if you are not used to criticism, not because you will feel bad, but because you might start making changes here and there and end up with a chaotic document which is nothing like the idea you had of a resume. So, if you are going to ask a friend or family member to take a look at your resume take every comment as a suggestion that you do not necessary have to take into account.

It would be better if you can talk to a professional that works in a related field to review your resume, that means that if you are applying for a legal position, for example, you should ask some lawyer or legal adviser to review your resume, this person can give you more attractive ideas and suggestions than a friend of yours can give. There is always a person available to assist you.

The last check

So you are done with suggestions and stress about your resume and you want to just send it and get over with it; fine, but a last look is convenient. After you’ve written the first draft of your resume, put it down for a few hours and go do something totally unrelated. Get your mind off your resume for awhile, after that read it again, maybe you’ll see areas that you want to change or improve.

Check the spelling and punctuation just to make sure you didn’t missed up anything, also take a look at the dates, chronological order is imperative. Don’t forget to add your photo, employers may want to know who is the person behind the document. After that be sure your resume is ready for action.

How long should your resume be?
This is an important fact because employers generally don’t have enough time to review all the cvs entirely, is for this reason that a brief resume can be a key to success. Try to make yours short, one or two pages are fine.

If you can get everything to fit on one page, great. In most cases, a one-page resume is more effective that two pages. But a two-page resume is fine for technical careers or people with more than 10-15 years of experience.

How do you make room for more information?
There are four areas you can make smaller to fit more text onto page:

Name and/or address? shrink the font size by two points.
Spacing between sections? shrink the font size from 12 to 8 points.
Section headings? shrink the font size from 14 to 13 or 12 points.
The body copy? shrink the font size from 12 to 11 points.
