Job Description

We are looking for a Communications Officer, to undertake a variety of communication tasks at BREEF. The Communications Officer will coordinate BREEF’s public relations and outreach efforts with respect to key conservation messages, including content development, media management, press relations and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, you will be responsible for executing the Young Reporters of the Environment (YRE) programme and activities in collaboration with the existing Eco-Schools programme and according to the Foundation for Environmental Education standards. To be an excellent Communications Officer, you must be organized and detail-oriented, comfortable working with diverse teams. 

Salary is commensurate with experience.

 

Communications

  1. Manage communications through media relations, social media etc. for BREEF programmes
  2. Coordinate press relations including preparation and submission of press releases; scheduling radio and television appearances.
  3. Support other public awareness activities/campaigns relevant to BREEF’s mission.
  4. Maintain and enhance BREEF’s web-based and social media presence.  
  5. Facilitate regular engagement of BREEF’s members and volunteers, including preparation of a monthly newsletter, database management and subscriptions, annual report and special events.
  6. Manage all grant activities associated with BREEF Outreach goals.
  7. Implement Young Reporters for the Environment  programme and activities.
  8. Liaise with programme sponsors and volunteers to ensure programme success.
  9. Develop and acquire promotional, educational and other programme resources. 
  10. Work directly with school Principals and Eco Clubs to mentor schools implementing the YRE programme.
  11. Coordinate opportunities for sharing experiences and networking between local and international YRE schools; including annual coordinators workshop and youth workshops.
  12. Liaise with YRE-Schools international coordination and attend National Operators Meetings.
  13. Support BREEF’s other school-based and public education activities.
  14. Write project reports based on evaluations of workshops and programmes and in accordance with grant requirements.
  • General
  1. Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of client, staff and agency information.
  2. Any other duties as assigned by Management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications or related area; at least 3 years of related experience. 
  • Persons with a degree in marine/environmental science and relevant experience will also be considered.  
  • Understanding of marine conservation issues in The Bahamas  
  • Capacity to build good rapport with stakeholders at all levels in Bahamian society; international partners  Excellent written, listening and oral communication skills 
  • Creative and innovative in approach to work and problem-solving.  Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.  
  • Ability to set priorities and organize time efficiently
  • Proficiency in use of MS Office Suite, web-based and social media.  Photography, videography and/or graphic arts experience.  
  • Works well independently and as part of a team.  
  • Physically fit – willing to work outdoors; ability to swim and SCUBA qualifications are an asset  Willing to work flexible or extended hours, when needed.
  • Available for travel both locally and internationally
