This role is based on Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

As Aquarist, you will be responsible for the care of our population of southern stingrays, perform husbandry procedures under the direction of the Animal Program Manager of the aquatic animal collections at Castaway Cay in The Bahamas and take part in ensuring our guests participating in Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure have an exceptional experience while visiting Castaway Cay.

You will report to: Animal Programs Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the health and wellbeing of our population of southern stingrays
  • Perform daily husbandry procedures as well as advanced medical treatments under the direction of the Animal Program Manager of the aquatic animal collections at Castaway Cay in The Bahamas
  • Effectively deliver the stingray program to guests of all ages that enhance, educate and inspire animal care and conservation
  • Deliver exceptional service to guests participating in Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure
  • Prepare marine life diets while maintaining accurate record keeping
  • Perform disease diagnosis, diet preparation, animal feeding, cleaning of animal facilities and equipment
  • Facilitate interactive and engaging presentations and the demonstration on how to feed stingrays
  • Partner with various teams on Castaway Cay to ensure a great guest/crew experience
  • Confidently deliver animal care and conservation information for media
  • Facilitate special requests and/or presentations as needed in partnership with Island Operations leadership, Disney Cruise Line Public Affairs and Marketing for media and/or VIP guests
  • Integrate the Disney standard of guest service into daily assignments
  • Additional duties and tasks designated by leadership, when necessary

Basic Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in The Bahamas
  • Previous animal care experience especially elasmobranches
  • Proven knowledge of marine life behavior, physiology, general biology, nutritional requirements and reproductive needs
  • Demonstrated commitment for conservation and animal care
  • Proven guest/public interaction and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven attention to detail, accuracy and consistency
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and to be on time for scheduled shift and presentation times
  • SCUBA certified
  • Ability to work well with others in a team-based environment
  • Ability to accept change and initiate an action plan
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions consistent with the team philosophy
  • High school degree or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Aquaculture or Zoology
  • Minimum 3 years experience in the field of aquarium husbandry; at least one year at an AZA accredited institution
  • Proven leadership/management experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to conservation and animal care
  • Small boat handling experience
  • Advanced dive certifications, Rescue diver, etc.
  • Be able to work unsupervised and make decisions consistent with the team philosophy
  • Be willing to accept and give feedback to other team members openly

Additional Information:

This role is based on Disney’s private island in The Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

You must:

  • Be receptive to island life – living and working on a remote island
  • Be willing to follow and perform safety role, emergency responsibilities and associated responsibilities as specified in the Island Safety Plan
  • Be willing to be appreciative of working and living in a multi-cultural environment
  • If applicable, be willing to share a confined cabin with other crew members and appreciative of working and living in a multicultural environment that has strict rules and regulations

Your Responsibilities:

  • Obtain a criminal background check
  • Bring approved work shoes

Disney Cruise Line is a drug-free workplace. All new hires are required to undergo drug/alcohol testing within the first week upon arriving on the island and throughout their contracts. Failure to pass the drug/alcohol testing will result in immediate termination.
